Wrestling looks to get back to winning ways
February 20, 2004
The NIU wrestling team will try to get back in the win column against Buffalo and Eastern Michigan at 10 a.m. Sunday in a triangular meet at Buffalo.
The Huskies (10-5 overall, 2-1 MAC) have more conference wins than Buffalo (11-4, 1-2) and EMU (9-7, 0-3) combined.
NIU lost its last meet on Wednesday against No. 5 Missouri.
Buffalo has dropped three of its last six meets after starting the season with eight straight wins. Two of the losses were against top-25 teams Lehigh and Central Michigan.
EMU has lost seven off its past 15 meets, two to ranked teams CMU and Michigan.
All of the Huskies’ losses have been to ranked opponents, so if history repeats itself and the streak continues, NIU should fare well in both matches.
“To win these two matches would put us in great position with the conference standings,” NIU coach Dave Grant said.
Buffalo has two ranked wrestlers on its team. Mark McKnight, 125 pounds, is 19th in the country and 197-pound Kyle Cerminara is 18th. EMU has one in James Holmes, who is 15th in the 165-pound weight class.
The Huskies have the same number of ranked wrestlers on their team as the other two teams combined. Ben Heizer, 184 pounds, is second in the nation. Sam Hiatt, 133 pounds, is 12th and Josh Wooton, 149 pounds, is 17th.
“I think these matches are huge,” Grant said. “The goal is to go in there and move them all out of our way.”
