Wrestling tops Eastern and Southern Illinois
February 7, 2004
The NIU wrestling team outscored its opponents 75-13 in two victories over Eastern Illinois and Southern Illinois this weekend.
On Sunday, the Huskies tamed Southern Illinois 49-0 on Senior Appreciation Day at Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center.
NIU’s senior 125-pounder Dave Aranda recorded his second pin in as many matches. But none were as important to him as the one he had Sunday, he said.
“It was pretty good,” Aranda said. “My parents and my family are up here. Everyone came out. It’s exciting to get a pin and get more people interested in wrestling.”
Sam Hiatt (133 pounds), Joe Henning (157 pounds), Danny Burk (174 pounds) and heavyweight Joe Sapp all had pins in their matches.
Against host EIU, Aranda started the meet with a pin late in the first period versus Kevin McNicholas for the first team points in the Huskies’ 26-13 victory Friday night.
“I thought Dave’s pin was huge,” NIU coach Dave Grant said. “It got us off to a great start and set the tone for our early matches. After Dave’s win, we got rolling and built that 20-0 lead and made it virtually impossible for Eastern Illinois to come back on us.”
After the Aranda pin, NIU went on to win the next four matches.
Hiatt had a 3-1 decision over Pat Dowty. Last season, Hiatt and Dowty went to overtime; Hiatt won.
Andy Hiatt (141), who, along with Josh Wooton, is tied for second on the team with 18 wins, had a 14-5 major decision (a win by 8-14 points) over Bob Fangerow
Wooton, the 18th-ranked, 149-pound sophomore, also had a 14-5 major decision over Adam Beeler.
Henning edged Clay French with a 3-2 win.
Grant was pleased with his team’s effort and performance over the weekend.
“I just think that our shape and the way we approach the match about getting in there and going after guys can rattle some people,” Grant said. “So the key for us was the guys that went out. They won big, by 10 or 11 or a pin.”
