Panel discusses Greek issues

NIU Greeks will hold their annual Fusaro Leadership Institute this Saturday for students looking to discuss community issues and hone their competitive business skills.

“We have educational sessions for members of chapter executive boards and council executive boards,” said Darnell Bradley, program coordinator for fraternity and sorority affairs.

The sessions cover topics including scholarships, risk management and recruitment, Bradley said.

Bradley said the event was named after former NIU provost Tony Fusaro in honor of his dedication to the Greek community at NIU.

Fusaro served as a chapter adviser to several fraternities and sororities in the ’80s and early ’90s.

This year’s institute will include a town hall panel format, Bradley said.

“Everybody shows up. We have a panel that’s made up of Greek life professionals, campus administrators and city officials,” Bradley said.

The panel also will field questions from students ranging from Greek Row safety to improving council relations, he said.

“What we hope happens is [to] get a dialogue started between stakeholders in the panel and stakeholders in the audience,” Bradley said. “We try to have a balance of expertise.”

Speaker Nonnie Cameron Owens also will give a presentation on business etiquette training.

Owens was a fraternity house director for more than 25 years, Bradley said, and will speak to Greek students about business situations such as job interviews.

The Fusaro Leadership Institute will begin at noon Saturday at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium and is open to Greek students only. Doors will open at 11 a.m.
