Convocation Center employee injured in possible fall at arena
February 4, 2004
Officials have confirmed that an accident occurred just over a week ago at the Convocation Center, which injured one of the arena workers.
The Northern Star received an anonymous tip last week that a part-time employee fell about 15 feet from an unconfirmed location and suffered massive head injuries. The person then was taken to a Rockford hospital for treatment.
Kevin Selover, the marketing director for the arena, confirmed that an incident happened on Jan. 25 but wouldn’t comment further on the situation.
“It involved an employee. My understanding is that no one saw the incident happen,” said Melanie Magara, NIU’s assistant vice president of Public Affairs. “It may have been a fall; the person was injured.”
Magara said she thinks the employee was female, and the victim’s identity isn’t being released.
“Once these matters enter the realm of the health care system, there is very little information we can give or access,” she said.
DeKalb Fire Chief Lanny Russell said the fire department did respond to a call at the arena on the same day; however, he wouldn’t comment on what happened once firefighters arrived.
“I believe the person was hospitalized,” Magara said. “It’s so vague at this point, and it isn’t clear what had happened because no one saw the incident happen.”
