Hide the children! Chappelle’s Comin’
February 19, 2004
He lit up in “Half Baked,” made racist jokes on his comedy show and now Dave Chappelle, one of America’s hottest comedians, is coming to NIU.
As part of his current comedy tour, Chappelle will stop at the Convocation Center on April 15. The show is the first to be sponsored by both the Convocation Center and the Campus Activities Board.
Chappelle, who has been performing stand-up for more than 16 years, is currently in the second season of his “Chappelle Show” on Comedy Central. Chappelle’s show has been described as his personal joke book brought to life. Chappelle also has starred in recent comedies including “Undercover Brother,” “Half Baked” and “The Nutty Professor.”
Chappelle’s outspoken routines make for a show geared toward a mature audience, said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center. It’s also a very student-orientated show, he added.
Because the Convocation Center is trying to gear the show toward students, Selover said it was a good opportunity to get CAB involved.
“It’s beneficial to both us and Campus Activities Board,” Selover said.
CAB assisted in the funding to bring Chappelle to NIU and will handle a lot of the on-campus promotions for the show, said Lydia Feliciano, CAB public relations coordinator.
Tickets for the show are $24 for students with an NIU OneCard and $34 for non-students. The $10 price break is the largest discount the Convocation Center has given to students for a show, Selover said.
Roughly 5,000 tickets will be available. In the fall, about 3,000 people attended a Convocation Center show starring comedian Wayne Brady.
Tickets for the show go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at the Convocation Center Box office, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com or by phone at 312-559-1212.
