Award spotlights campus women
February 3, 2004
The Presidential Commission on the Status of Women is looking for women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and who have expanded their efforts beyond expectations and work responsibilities.
“The Stricklin Award provides the campus with the opportunity to recognize other women who have exhibited a kind of commitment,” said Sharon Howard, director of University Resources for Women, 105 Normal Road. “Also, it recognizes those who have been willing to make similar sacrifices.”
The Stricklin Award has been given out for the past 10 years.
Last year, Sue Doederlein, associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was recognized for her achievements.
“We recognized her contributions over a career lifetime,” Howard said.
The awards committee, which is appointed by the commission, will review nominations and select a recipient, Howard said. The award will be presented on April 18 during a ceremony on Honors Day.
Nominations are made by campus employees, Howard said.
“After the nomination deadline, a committee chosen from the President’s Commission on the Status of Women will review the applications and select the winner,” Howard said. “This is usually a very painful choice, much like having a whole group of excellent applicants for a single job. For this reason, the commission will be looking at the possibility of creating additional recognition programs for women at NIU.”
