SA vote requires CAB elections
February 7, 2004
Students now will be able to vote for Campus Activities Board executives in the same way they vote for Student Association positions.
The SA voted Sunday to approve a bill that amends the by-laws to state that any student organization that collects more than 10 percent of the student activity fee in a year is required to hold campus-wide elections for its executive members.
Currently, only two student organizations collect more than 10 percent of the activity fee: the SA and CAB. The SA already holds campus-wide elections for its executives.
“The bill … is a piece of legislation that will have an irrecoverable effect on CAB,” CAB President Jenny Suerth said.
The majority of senators favored the bill, which passed with nearly a three-to-one margin.
SA Senator Carl Williams said that since CAB represents all NIU students, the students should choose who runs CAB.
However, some senators were outspoken about their opposition to the bill.
“I don’t think a lot of students are going to respect us in the morning,” SA Senator Donna Dalton said about the decision.
Elections
The senate also chose an election commissioner, as well as its Board of Election members and chairman.
Erik Swastek, a sophomore pre-sociology major, was approved by the senate as election commissioner with a vote of 14-10-2.
Five senators were voted onto the board: Nick Pappaduros, Carl Williams, Eric Youngquist, Oliver Vazquez and Rachel Powe.
Williams was elected as chairman of the board.
