Convocation Center attracts students with February shows
February 5, 2004
General admission tickets (main floor seating) for this weekend’s performances of O.A.R. and Staind are sold out, but students still can get tickets if they do not mind taking a seat on another level.
O.A.R. kicks things off at 7 p.m. Friday at the Convocation Center, followed by Staind’s 7:30 p.m. performance on Sunday.
O.A.R., known for its rock/folk hit “That was a Crazy Game of Poker,” released its latest album, “In Between Now and Then,” in May. It is the group’s first CD with a major recording label, Lava/Everfine Records.
Staind began making its mark in 1999 with its album “Dysfunction.” The group joined the Family Values Tour, which featured acts such as Limp Bizkit and Stone Temple Pilots.
Staind’s latest album, “14 Shades of Grey,” also debuted in May and had immediate success, selling more than 200,000 copies in the first week.
Kevin Selover, the marketing manager for the arena, said the Convo Center will be set up to house about 4,000 seats for each show, but he said he doesn’t foresee a sellout for either show.
This is the second consecutive year the Convo Center has had a busy February schedule. Last year, Ja Rule, Styx and Kansas all performed at the arena.
Selover said having acts that are attractive to the student population is a main concern.
“We pride ourselves on hosting a variety of events,” he said, “but bringing in acts for the students is definitely a priority for us.”
Country music artists Brooks & Dunn will perform at the arena later this month. Main floor seating for their concert is sold out as well.
