Career day for Dacey leads NIU to victory

Though NIU’s Kristina Campos won three of the four events, senior Dannielle Dacey took the all-around individual award for the NIU gymnastics team Sunday against Ball State.

Dacey turned in her career-best performance and, along with Campos, led NIU (2-4 overall, 2-2 MAC) over BSU (4-5, 1-4) 194.525-193.375 at the Convocation Center.

After a fifth-place showing on Feb. 7 against Illinois State, Dacey rebounded with a meet-high 38.950 overall tally and the first individual overall win of her career.

“Dannielle had a rough meet at ISU,” NIU coach Mark Sontag said. “It was great that she got back on track tonight. Dacey is a senior and it’s just great to see a senior lead the team.”

Campos, a junior, turned in a second-place finish overall. She averaged a 9.842 in the three events she won, but faulted in the uneven bars and received a 9.3 tally, which opened the door for Dacey.

“We did a lot of work this week preparing for this meet,” Sontag said. “It really payed off.”

Along with Dacey and Campos, Tiffany Nolen and Ashlee Williams turned in good performances, Sontag said.

“We needed people to step up, and they stepped up big this week,” Sontag said. “I can’t stress how important our depth is. We have had a few people go down to injury, but that’s where our depth shows.”

Senior Courtney Vojtasek was Ball State’s highest individual place at third overall.

“This win should really get our morale turned around and get the girls to believe in themselves,” Sontag said.
