Grants total $3 million

Select counties and municipalities in Illinois have been announced as recipients of about $3 million in emergency management assistance grants.

DeKalb County will receive about $23,542 from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. The money will go toward operational costs for the county’s disaster agency, said Dennis Miller, coordinator of the DeKalb County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency.

The funds will help purchase office supplies, travel costs and cover some administrative costs, Miller said.

The agency, which works with local police and fire departments in responding to local emergencies such as damage caused by high winds, floods or ice storms, does not have a large budget, so the money helps, Miller said.

DeKalb County is one of 110 agencies to receive funding from Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

“Every accredited emergency services and disaster agency in Illinois is required to have a disaster plan, which takes time, staff and space,” IEMA Director William Burke said.

The grants help to ease the costs, he said.

All accredited agencies that applied for the grants received money. However, they must provide half of what they are funded, said Patti Thompson, public information officer for IEMA.

Other local agencies to receive money were Boone County with $16,427; Kane County with $69,265; and Ogle County with $18,292.
