Campos, gymnastics team to face Cardinals
February 13, 2004
Kristina Campos will look to make it two weeks in a row as MAC Gymnast of the Week when the NIU gymnastics team will compete against visiting Ball State at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center.
“It’s always an honor to get an award like that, but it doesn’t change anything,” Campos said. “I still have to go and work hard.”
Last year’s MAC Gymnast of the Year, Campos looks to lead NIU (1-4 overall, 1-2 MAC) with her team-high overall tally of 39.050 when they face Ball State (4-3, 1-3).
Campos, a junior, received her second weekly award of the year from the MAC and the fifth of her career in a meet against Illinois State on Saturday. The Huskies lost to ISU and Kent State the previous weekend.
The Huskies look to rebound after the loss last week, coach Mark Sontag said.
“It’s a big meet,” Sontag said. “I expect to see a good showing. I am really looking for some people to step it up this weekend.”
“We have some injuries, but that’s every year,” Sontag said. “It just gives others opportunities. I think Tiffany Nolen should push for all four routines this week, and Kristin Harrington could get in for the floor and beam routines.”
Standing in NIU’s way is Ball State, which lost to Bowling Green on Saturday by .050 in the 2004 Cardinal Classic. Also, Ball State visits University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday for a meet prior to the meet with the Huskies.
“[Ball State] has been looking better all the time,” Sontag said. “We have been outscoring them on average so it should be a great meet.”
