Convocation Center to host trio of gymnastics teams Sun.

The NIU gymnastics team will host a trio of teams when Central Michigan, Winona State and Alaska-Anchorage visit for a 2 p.m. quadrangular Sunday at the Convocation Center.

The event will count as three individual meets for each team. The meet between NIU and CMU will count toward the MAC standings, while the meets with Winona State (2-2) and Alaska-Anchorage (4-4) will not.

After the victory last Sunday over Ball State, NIU (2-4 overall, 2-2 MAC) will look to topple CMU (9-3, 2-0). CMU is second place in the MAC.

The matchup also will showcase the past two MAC Gymnasts of the Week, NIU’s Kristina Campos and CMU’s Kara Reighard.

Campos is coming off a second-place individual finish against Ball State, while Reighard had the highest point tally in the MAC this season against Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

“Kara is a great gymnast,” NIU coach Mark Sontag said. “She’s the head coach’s daughter, so she’s been raised for gymnastics. But we have Kristina, so our team’s top girls should cancel each other out.”

With two of the top girls in the MAC facing off, much of the pressure will fall on the rest of the team, Sontag said.

One of the girls Sontag is looking to step up is senior Dannielle Dacey. Dacey is coming off her career high and first overall individual win against Ball State.

“Dacey has really been hitting her stride,” Sontag said. “She should play a huge part this weekend. Tiffany Nolen is another one who could play a big role.”

CMU will try to keep its undefeated mark in the MAC and extend its winning streak over NIU to 14 straight meets, dating back to 1998.

Along with the team trying to extend a streak, junior Reighard also will look to extend her streak of MAC Gymnast of the Week awards to three consecutive weeks.

“We have competed better against the better teams this season, and we really have our work cut out for us this weekend,” Sontag said.
