Ice attack

A hot water pipe burst Thursday afternoon at the Art Building, leaving a conference room and two offices soaked with water.
“No classrooms were affected, no art or files were damaged and no one was injured,” said Larry Gregory, assistant director of the School of Art.
The hot water pipe had broken already and was in the process of being repaired, he said, but no one was working on the pipe at the time it burst.
The pipe burst was because of the cold weather and because there was no heat where the pipe was located, Gregory said.
“The conference room was really cold, and the heat in the room had been shut off because they were doing repairs to the pipe,” Gregory said.
Gregory said he was not sure how long the heat was off.
The pipe near the third-floor conference room caused water to rush off the southwest corner of the building onto a porch below. From the outside of the building, water could be seen dripping from the third floor onto the ground.
“We were concerned with trying to shut off the water without affecting heating in the rest of the building,” Gregory said. “It was cascading out into the hallways and into the other rooms.”
