The Student Association Finance Committee approved the Office of Campus Recreation’s $237,649 budget at Tuesday night’s meeting, while later reducing N.A.T.I.O.N.S.’s $11,500 budget request to $7,450.

The OCR requested $25,490 to staff and equip the newly renovated Chick Evans Field House, which is scheduled to open by summer or fall, Campus Recreation Director John Sweeney said. The proposed budget included $1,000 for first aid supplies and $700 for men’s basketballs, which sell for $50 each, Sweeney said.

The budget request also included money that will allow the OCR to adjust to this year’s minimum wage increase to $5.50 and also next year’s projected jump to $6.50, he said.

The newly renovated fieldhouse is projected to raise the OCR’s $25,000 income to $43,000, a total increase of $18,000, Sweeney said.

N.A.T.I.O.N.S. outlined an $11,500 budget for its Conference of Indigenous Wisdom, but the committee cut the group’s request to $7,450.

The finance committee eliminated N.A.T.I.O.N.S.’s $1,000 media services bill and cut its budget for conference speakers by $2,000 to $4,000.

Rita Reynolds, N.A.T.I.O.N.S. faculty adviser, said a $4,050 conference budget decrease would restrict the authentic Native American speaker selection, but Senate Speaker Andrew Nelms cited previous allocations to similar SA groups.

“This is a much larger sum than we’ve granted everyone else,” Nelms said.
