Veterans frat joins NIU
January 28, 2004
Delta Omicron Sigma, a veterans fraternity, is a new addition to the brotherhood on campus. Because of the Sept. 11, 2003, attacks, actives were called for duty, reducing the number of potential new members.
In fall 2003, Fred Anderson was eager to see his brothers come together again. Anderson contacted all the members of his old fraternity and discussed reactivating the fraternity, but because of difficulties out of their control, Anderson and other brothers decided to form their own fraternity on campus.
“Starting our own fraternity gives us the opportunity to share our experiences with others. We chose the letters Delta Omicron Sigma, or DOS, to stand for ‘Date Of Separation’ to signify one’s next step following their departure from the military,” Anderson said.
Anderson is the fraternity’s president and Tony Marrero is vice president. Delta Omicron Sigma currently has no events planned for the semester.
“As we are just getting our feet back on campus, the schedule for the coming semester is still open,” Anderson said. “We are going slow to ensure things are getting done correctly. Much will depend on how many people we recruit this semester.”
Delta Omicron Sigma will have an informational meeting at 8 p.m. today and Thursday at DuSable Hall, Room 412. It is open to all honorably discharged veterans, reservists, National Guards and Coast Guards. If anyone needs a ride or cannot attend, call Fred Anderson at 847-668-9858 or e-mail [email protected].
“The veteran’s fraternity can be a great experience, and with us just coming out as our own organization, I believe we are set up for success.”
