Phi Sigma Kappa to celebrate holidays with Hope Haven kids
December 5, 2003
Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity members will be spreading holiday spirit to children at DeKalb’s Hope Haven shelter.
The fraternity hopes to get the children in the Christmas spirit at their second annual Christmas party from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house, 1300 Blackhawk Road.
“We hope that the children will have a good time filled with holiday cheer and that their parents will enjoy themselves also,” said Glenn Roby, director of the fraternity’s national board.
Hope Haven, 1145 Rushmore Drive, is a homeless shelter for families in need of shelter and for those who find themselves in emergency situations without a place to live.
Fraternity members will interact with the children, and one member will play Santa, handing out presents and taking pictures with the children, Roby said. About 20 children, ages 3 to 17, are expected to attend.
Ken Green, a Phi Sigma Kappa alumnus, provided the tree. The house will be decorated for the holiday and the children will be able to take an ornament home with them.
After the party, the tree will be donated to Hope Haven, Roby said.
University and city officials also are invited to the Christmas party.
“The mayor and the alderman are going to try and make it, and [director of the University Judicial Office] Larry Bolles will be there along with Lt. Dean Richardson, the Greek Row fire inspector,” Roby said.
The party is by invitation only, but the fraternity hopes that their good deed will spread.
“This is one of our traditions and we enjoy helping the children,” said John Burns, Phi Sigma Kappa president. “We hope to continue doing so and that other Greek organizations will follow in our example.”
