Alicia Keys: The Diary of Alicia Keys

By Rashida S. Restaino

The newest LP “The Diary of Alicia Keys” comes two years after the success surrounding her debut release, “Songs in A Minor.”

Keys is vocally stunning on the single “You Don’t Know My Name.”

-Sophomore albums are a challenge for artists, especially for someone like Alicia Keys who gained popularity with fans in all genres of music.

Keys shows her New York upbringing with classical piano training in tracks like “If I Ain’t Got You'” and “Diary,” which features Tony Toni Tone.

Though Keys has soul and her musical talent supercedes her years, tracks like “Heartburn” try too hard to demonstrate the spirit of her predecessors.

“When You Really Love Someone” sounds reminiscent of “Fallin”” combined with “A Woman’s Worth.” The lyrics switch from man to woman and say, “A man/ Ain’t a man/ If he ain’t man enough to/ Love you when you’re right/ Love you when you’re wrong/ Giving you he’s last/ Because he’s thinking of you first.”

Even the interlude “Feeling U Feeling Me” will have you begging for more.

The LP must be titled the “Diary of…” because it shares a lot of personal thoughts that not everyone will relate to.

For those who do, Keys sings “Nobody Not Really,” a thoughtful ballad that asks, “Who really cares/ When I talk/ What I feel/ What I say/ Nobody does really.”

Those who see beyond her sexy hood style and hear it reflected in her music will not lose Alicia Keys’ message.
