SA media board finalizes plans for magazine
November 13, 2003
Additional details about the Student Association’s new magazine, Huskie Highlights, were unveiled by SA President Shaun Crisler at Wednesday’s media board meeting.
The magazine will have a circulation of 6,000, with at least 3,000 to be distributed in the residence halls.
“With double rooms, you get one in there with the hope that at least two people will read it,” said Allison Thompson, SA director of public affairs and member of the media board. “That way we don’t have to sink the whole 6,000 in the residence halls.”
The first edition of Huskie Highlights is expected to be published by the end of this month. Because of some difficulties, however, the release date is later than the SA originally had planned.
“We’ve run into a few bumps along the way,” said Crisler, who also is the media board chair.
The first issue will be light on organizational information, but Crisler said he hopes the board will be able to improve upon that aspect of the magazine.
Members of the media board had positive reactions to the magazine.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Lindsay Lang, media board member and vice president of public relations for the College Panhellenic Council.
Crisler also clarified the additional responsibilities of the board, which include providing feedback via the SA Web site, www.sa.niu.edu, and helping to develop an event server.
The server will be a way for students to request regular e-mail updates on organizations’ activities.
As part of the SA Web site, each organization is provided its own “simple” Web site, which contains information about its mission and officers.
“[We want to] make it easier for students to get in contact with the student leaders on campus,” Crisler said.
The media board also will evaluate its membership in the near future.
“As we get things rolling, we might need to look at other organizations and expanding membership,” Crisler said.
The organizations represented on the media board are the Asian-American Association, Association of Latin-American Students, Black Student Union, College Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, SA Senate and Residence Hall Association.
