Playing without preseason All-MAC guard Perry Smith, the NIU basketball team defeated the Spotlite Jammers 89-47 in the second and final exhibition game of the season.

Smith sat out with an ankle injury he sustained during practice. He is expected to play in the regular season opener Nov. 22 against Eastern Illinois.

Sophomore Todd Peterson and senior Marcus Smallwood paced the Huskies with 19 points each.

Peterson’s points came on 6-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-7 from behind the three-point line.

As a team, NIU was 10-of-18 from three-point range.

Smallwood added 10 rebounds and joined Rome Sanders (14 points and 10 rebounds) in double digits for both categories.

For the Jammers, it was the second of three games in three nights. They were led by University of Iowa graduate Jason Price, who had 10 points.

The Jammers lost to DePaul 117-79 on Saturday and will play tonight at the University of Illinois.

Along with Smith, forward Johnathan Byrd and center Bryson McKenzie also missed the game with injuries for the Huskies.

Byrd has a sore hip muscle and McKenzie is recovering from orthoscopic knee surgery. Byrd is expected to return against EIU while McKenzie will be out about two more weeks.
