Aerobic workout

The long list of aerobics classes at the Student Recreation Center will have people dancing, cycling and boxing into good shape.
The Rec offers 12 different aerobics classes throughout the day Monday through Thursday and Sunday.
Of these classes, the most popular are usually kickboxing, a total-body cardiovascular workout and Pilates , a class geared at toning the core muscle groups in the body, said Christi Nobrega, program assistant to the fitness coordinator.
“Kickboxing can be really empowering, which appeals to women in particular,” she said. “Pilates is for anyone who wants a flat stomach and a lot of core strength.”
Other popular classes include Body Toning and Abs, Glutes and Thighs (AGT). One class that has declined in popularity is step aerobics.
“It was kind of a mid-’90s thing, and it’s lost some popularity since,” she said.
Attendees of these classes are mostly women, but some men attend spinning, yoga and Pilates classes, Nobrega said.
“I think people enjoy aerobics classes because they can have fun and have it go fast because they’re more motivated,” she said.
Some students enjoy participating in aerobics classes more than working out in other areas of the Rec.
“It’s kind of like a team sport; you get into it more and have more encouragement to push harder,” said graduate student Kate Madden.
Other students said aerobics classes provide an opportunity to work out with people who have the same fitness goals.
“I know that I can’t work out by myself, and the environment is usually more friendly and less intimidating than a weight room,” said Melissa Hagensee, a graduate student in public administration.
