The remedy: Jason Mraz
November 18, 2003
NIU’s Campus Activities Board continues its fall lineup with singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.
Tickets are $15 for NIU students with a valid OneCard, and $18 for the general public, available at the student center’s box office or by phone at 753-3146.
Mraz has an eclectic sound that has been compared to Jack Johnson and John Mayer and has shared venues with Bob Dylan, Paula Cole, Jewel and David Gray.
CAB chose Mraz in an effort to bring more mainstream artists to campus.
“One of our complaints that we get is that we don’t bring in enough big-name, mainstream artists,” CAB Concerts Coordinator John Benson said. “I think that we caught Mraz at the right time because he’s starting to gain some momentum.”
“The Remedy (I Won’t Worry),” Mraz’s first single from “Waiting For My Rocket to Come,” spent 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 15.
Opening for Mraz will be San Diego native Tristan Prettyman, whose confessional lyrics and acoustic guitar bring to mind a combination of Ani DiFranco and Jack Johnson.
Prettyman has opened for John Mellencamp and, more recently, has joined Mraz for the rest of his tour.
Benson predicts a good turnout at the concert.
“It is our goal to bring in artists that are in the same caliber musically as some of the mainstream artists, but not as big,” Benson said. “Right now, Mraz is doing things that John Mayer did a year ago, and I’m happy that an artist we’ve booked is doing so well.”
