Sororities to co-sponsor blood drive

The Gamma Phi Omega and Sigma Lambda Gamma sororities will co-sponsor their first blood drive from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Holmes Student Center’s Illinois Room.

Each donor will receive a free pair of flannel pants and must bring a photo ID to the blood drive.

“This is our first blood drive, but hopefully not the last,” said Elvia Garcia, community service chair for Gamma Phi Omega.

The sororities teamed up to promote unity among Greeks.

“We are both Latina-based and Latina-oriented, and we wanted to show the community what we can give back to DeKalb,” Garcia said. “Both of our groups can be equally involved by working together and we’ll also be able to get the word out faster.”

The blood drive was an obvious choice for a community service project, Garcia said.

“There has been a shortage of blood lately, and we figured we would get faster, positive results out of working together,” she said.

Members also said giving blood is a good idea.

“You definitely never know when you’re gonna need it, whether it’s for a family member or for somebody else you love; if it’s not gonna cost you anything, then why not donate blood?” Garcia said.
