Huskies set for final shot at BGSU

Having gone 0-9 on the road this season, the NIU men’s soccer team will have its final chance to snap the streak.

The Huskies will take on Bowling Green at 3 p.m. today in the first round of the MAC Tournament. The tournament is hosted by the Falcons this year.

NIU is the fifth seed in the tournament, having ended the season with a record of 3-12-2 overall, and 2-4 in the MAC.

The Huskies’ opponent finished with a MAC record of 2-3-1, placing BGSU one seed ahead of NIU going into the tournament.

In regular-season play, BGSU beat NIU 2-1, scoring the winning goal with 23:49 left in the second half. The teams were tied at one heading into halftime.

“As disappointing as our record is, it doesn’t show what the team is truly made of,” senior Jason Sullivan said.

Sullivan continued the team’s tradition of excellence in the classroom this season. The defensive captain was named to the 2003 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V team.

Last season, former defender Peter Agrimson received Second-Team Scholar All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, placing Agrimson among the top 33 student-athletes in collegiate soccer.

This honor also puts Sullivan on the list for Academic All-America consideration.

“Jason is a fantastic player, one of the best central defenders in the MAC,” NIU coach Steve Simmons said. “He makes a difference every time he’s out on the field. To do what he does and still maintain the effort he has in the classroom, that’s the epitome of what we want in our program.”
