A sweet class being offered on campus

Unlike kids in a candy store, adults who want to learn to make candy may be dismayed at the cost.

The Confectionary, 149 N. Second St., offers a class that teaches candy-making to those seriously interested in going into the business.

“I teach people how to make everything we make,” said Confectionary owner Tom Smith.

The $15,000 price pays for two years of candy-making experience.

Smith said he never has tasted any caramel as good as his, and they even have had industry spies come into the store to try to steal his recipes.

For the candy-making class, he accepts only one student at a time. The student makes the candy alongside those who work for The Confectionary.

“We are giving you our formulas when you go through the class,” Smith said. “We have had a lot of inquiries about the class, but $15,000 is a lot of money.”

The class has been taught for three years, and everything made during the learning process is sold. Nothing made by the student is of lower quality than what is sold normally, Smith said.

Smith also owns The Confectionary in Sycamore, located at 235 W. State St. For more information on the class, call 758-5990.
