Student Association recognizes 4 new campus organizations
October 27, 2003
The Student Association Senate recognized four new organizations Sunday night.
Those organizations are the American Society of Engineering Education, Association of Information Technology Professionals, Jesus on Campus and the NIU Table Tennis Club.
“I am excited about the fact that new student organizations are being formed,” said Andrew Nelms, SA Senate speaker. “That indicates to me that more students are wanting to get involved on campus, which is one of the goals of the Student Association and a very important facet of anyone’s collegiate career.”
Lucky Islam, an electrical engineering major, represented the American Society of Engineering Education.
“This [organization] is about letting others know about engineering,” Islam said.
The organization will be open to engineering majors and non-majors. They currently do not have any members except for the officers.
The Association of Information Technology Professionals is a group designed to bring together students interested in information technology.
Andrew O’Brien, an OMIS major, represented the new organization, which already has 35 members.
O’Brien explained the organization also hopes to do community service projects, including a possible fundraiser for Meals on Wheels.
Jesus on Campus is a new religious organization affiliated with the Apostolic Pentecostal denomination of Christianity.
Pre-elementary education major Christina Mathis started the group when no current organization met her spiritual needs because of the uniqueness of the Apostolic Pentecostal faith.
The organization currently has 11 members.
The NIU Table Tennis Club is for students who like to play table tennis. Both the Office of Campus Recognition and the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association already recognize the new organization.
Michael Nowicki, a business administration major, represented the NIU Table Tennis Club. The organization has 21 members and plans to compete in a tournament at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign later this year.
A vote to recognize two additional organizations was postponed a week, because no representatives were present. The groups are the Black Male Initiative and International Students of Latin America.
