Pulling off a hat trick

Their shirts all read, “It’s not cocky if you can back it up.” On Saturday, the women tuggers of Alpha Delta Pi did just that.

The team won its third consecutive women’s tugs competition.

“It’s amazing we could win again”, said Jessica Monte, a junior psychology and child development major and tugger for Alpha Delta Pi.

“This competition is such a big part of our house, to win it all was nice … very nice,” she said.

For Alpha Delta Pi, the win was the payoff for five weeks of conditioning which included daily mile runs and tugging for two hours in rain and mud. Practices sometimes were held at 6 a.m.

Monte said the competition took lots of dedication. It was very physically demanding and it was very time-consuming.

Delta Zeta made it to the championship round by way of defeating Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Sigma Alpha.

“The brackets were really tough this year,” said Monica Discipio, a junior hospitality administration major and third year tugger for Alpha Delta Pi.

“The rugby team made things really interesting. They were tough competition. It was their first year and we didn’t know what to expect,” Discipio added.

Discipio also said her third time winning was an incredible feeling, especially because they won with so many of their team members hurt.

Injuries included sprained ankles and a fractured rib.

Marissa Silva, a third-year tugger and junior OMIS major, said this year’s victory was different because they had new coaches, new tactics, new competition and new girls tugging for them.
