Catholic Diocese to hold youth rally

The Catholic Diocese of Rockford will hold a high school youth rally from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Holmes Student Center.

The day-long event will feature a keynote speaker, various workshops and will conclude with a concert, said Mark Herwaldt, the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Diocese of Rockford.

The keynote speaker will be Chris Padgett, the lead singer of Scarecrow and Tinmen. Herwaldt said Padgett has a very powerful message.

Herwaldt said the workshops throughout the day will deal with topics like how to live daily life and how to pray. Catholic Mass also will be a part of the rally, he said.

“We’re trying to bring together as many high school students from our diocese as we can,” Herwaldt said.

The diocese has held rallies like this for more than a decade, Herwaldt said. “We haven’t done it for a couple years, but we’re trying to revive it,” he said. Herwaldt said they have had anywhere from 700 to 900 kids attend rallies in the past.

The cost of the event is $25, which includes food and all the day’s programs. The rally is intended for any high school student, Herwaldt said.

“Our attempt is to change the lives of high school students for the better and bring them closer to God,” he said.
