Polls need to go
October 14, 2003
It’s hard to believe, but I would disagree with the one system that actually credits the Huskies: the college football polls.
One can look at last week’s poll to understand the inconsistencies in the rankings.
Ohio State is ahead of Wisconsin, Georgia is ahead of LSU and Iowa is ahead of Michigan State.
The only problem is, all of those teams have one loss, and each of the latter teams beat the higher ranked teams earlier this season.
Under what system other than the polls does the head-to-head matchup work against you?
The polls will tell you they vote on a week-to-week basis and move teams up and down based on that.
It explains why, despite playing a terrible game against Ohio and barely squeaking out a victory, NIU actually gained two spots in the polls.
However, if the Huskies played at Oklahoma, the No. 1 team in the nation, and lost by two points on a last-second field goal that barely caught the post and bounced in, we would move down in the polls.
What isn’t explained is that while NIU did move up two spots in the polls last week, Purdue managed to jump ahead of the Huskies in the coaches’ poll following their 28-14 victory over 2-5 Penn State.
TCU is also ranked ahead of NIU in the coaches’ poll. And while they are undefeated, their biggest victory to date is … well … I’m not sure who their biggest victory was. Why don’t you try and tell me who’s better: Tulane, Navy, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Army or South Florida?
So many questions are raised every week by these completely biased rankings that they’re not even worth looking at.
We need to adopt a new system, an unbiased one that properly balances a team’s talent and how they have delivered on the field.
This system needs a set of rules that govern the voting, unlike the current system which seems to have zero rules the voters abide by.
We can’t push down one team below another simply because they lost later in the year, like Ohio State, who now has few opportunities to move past USC or Georgia unless they lose.
And it can’t put NIU No. 1 at the end of the year if they finish the season undefeated after beating East Carolina in the GMAC bowl.
Every week would have to be a blank slate for the voters, on which they place their teams in the order they deserve.
Then all the disputes could be settled, the proper teams would be placed on top, and at the end of the season we could accurately put together the best 25 teams in the country, NIU definitely included.
