NHPC may face budget trouble

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is seeking an additional $4,965 to pay for event security, a request that was denied last year.

Student Association senators will consider Sunday whether to give the NPHC additional funds to pay for increases in security costs. The group, which charged students in the past for some of its events, still plans on charging students even with the possibility of additional funding.

“Security costs are astronomical,” said NPHC Treasurer Danaya Merrills-Simmons.

NPHC has five remaining events for the year, including dances, speakers, comedians and an annual end-of-the-year party. The group usually charges up to $6 for comedians, parties and talent shows and $15 for its Homecoming event at the Convocation Center.

According to the senate bill, the cost per event for security has increased from $850 to $1,578, creating the need for an additional $4,965 in funding.

“Security is the biggest money grabber,” said NPHC President Demetrius Harvey, senior industrial technology major.

The change was made by NIU administration because a study determined the need for additional security, said Andrew Nelms, SA senate speaker.

NPHC received an SA allocation this year of $2,925 that largely pays for security costs.

A note written on NPHC’s copy of its approved budget told members to consider requesting the funding this year. Merrills-Simmons was unsure if it was a member of the SA or an administrator who wrote the note.

The SA decided on NPHC’s budget before the administration made its decision to increase security costs.

NPHC’s end-of-the-year party, one of its larger events, will have an admission charge this year because of the increase in costs for security, regardless of SA action. In the past, the event had been free.

If the SA does not approve the request, NPHC will explore other options.

“We would probably have to cut events … or do fundraisers,” Harvey said.

Nelms believes the senate will not act upon the bill at Sunday’s meeting.

“I imagine [the bill] will be referred to [the] finance committee as do all financial matters of the senate,” Nelms said.

NPHC serves as the governing body of minority-oriented fraternities and sororities.
