PRISM to hold annual Stop the Hate Vigil

By Christina Chapman

PRISM, NIU’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization, will hold its annual Stop the Hate Vigil from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Center of United Campus Ministries.

The vigil is a response to the murders of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, who were both murdered in hate crimes in 1998.

“It is also to encourage all people to take a role in addressing hate in all communities,” said Margie Cook, the coordinator of LGBT’s resource center. “The vigil is a way to support people in taking steps to address intolerance when they see it happening.”

The crowd is expected to consist of 100 to 150 people.

“It’s usually a good mix of people, because the vigil targets all communities who experience hatred,” Cook said.

The program consists of various speakers. Mary Shelden, from the LGBT Resource Center, and PRISM co-president Robb Schuldt will present along with NIU Ombudsman Tim Griffin.

Jay Mayer, United Campus Ministries administrative assistant, said he hopes the vigil will bring down hate-related issues.

“We hope people will not be afraid to speak out, and that they will go out into the community and help end this fear in others,” he said.

After the program, there will be a candle-lit walk to the torch at the King Memorial Commons.

“Everyone is welcome to all our events, and I hope people will take a step out of their comfort zones and join us,” Cook said.

Also, October is Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month.

“The idea behind the month is to give people an accurate picture of the ways in which LGBT people have been a part of our society and societies all over the world by offering opportunities to learn,” Cook said.

This year’s history month will have social, educational and academic events to inform people about the LGBT community.
