Men’s soccer looks for 2nd straight win
September 30, 2003
“One more win, and that makes two. Win three, and that’s what we like to call a winning streak. It has happened before,” said James Gammon, who played Lou Brown in the movie “Major League.”
The NIU men’s soccer team (1-6-2, 1-0 MAC) has not won three straight games since it went 5-1 to close out the season in 1999.
After defeating Marshall on Sunday, NIU coach Steve Simmons looks to lead his players to their second victory of the year against a DePaul squad that has only won two of its eight games. The two teams face off at 3 p.m. today at DePaul.
The Blue Demons have struggled on offense and defense this season, having only scored five goals while allowing 14.
On the other hand, the Huskies have allowed 18 goals, but have scored 11, leaving them only eight goals shy of last years’ total.
Forward Tony Deldin has led the charge for NIU on offense with three goals and one assist.
“Tony provides a bit of pace and is a very opportunistic player for this team,” Simmons said.
Also, with Bernhard Hagevik and Vrahram Kadkhodaian scoring their first goals of the year against Marshall, the Huskies have seven players with at least one goal.
Simmons is pleased with the team’s goal output since he’s been starting five true freshmen: Matt Corcoran in goal, Mike Corvo and Justin McGrane on defense, Jose Alvarado at mid-fielder and Kevin Woerner at forward.
“These guys are fixtures,” Simmons said. “Right now they’ve earned the spots they’re at.”
NIU’s defense, led by senior Jason Sullivan, will have to shut down DePaul’s offensive combo of Luke Rojo and Edwin Arreola. Rojo has three goals and one assist on the season with 23 shots on goal. Arreola is next on the team with 16 shots and has scored one goal and delivered one assist.
The Huskies defense was already slowed down when sophomore goalkeeper Steve Goletz was lost for the season against Wisconsin after breaking his hand on a player’s head while going up for a ball. Goletz announced he will apply for a medical red-shirt this week.
“I found out that the bone in my hand was still cracked after they took the cast off Monday,” Goletz said.
Goletz was told he’d be out another month, which is when NIU begins the first round of the men’s soccer MAC Championships.
Simmons is not ruling out Goletz coming back for the MAC Championships, but if he can’t return this season, Simmons won’t guarantee Goletz his job next season.
“We don’t have to make a decision till the year’s over, but I’ve seen stranger things happen,” Simmons said. “However, if something is going well, we have to be careful to not mess with the chemistry. He’ll have to earn it back in training.”
