A recently installed bench near the East Lagoon was vandalized one day after it was installed.

NIU grounds employee Guy Bays said the bench was installed Tuesday afternoon and was destroyed by Wednesday morning.

Lt. Matthew Kiederlen of University Police was surprised the vandalism happened so quickly.

Kiederlen said the East Lagoon has a low crime rate because the area is patrolled regularly by police.

Judy Skorek, assistant director of University Resources for Women, walked by the destroyed bench Wednesday afternoon and was disappointed by its state.

“[It was] surprising. Even the concrete was destroyed,” Skorek said.
