SA decafs CAB

Campus Activities Board’s Coffeehouse series recently was cut because of a lack of funding.

The Student Association Senate cut CAB’s budget by $80,000, forcing CAB to cut Coffeehouse and its Film Committee, CAB President Jennifer Suerth said. The Fine Arts Committee lost money because of the funding cut, but it was not cut completely.

“Coffeehouse used to do a biweekly series in the Diversions Lounge,” Suerth said. “We brought in smaller acts that aren’t very well-known, as well as some open mic nights hosted by Harlem poets.”

Suerth said Coffeehouse was a very popular series that drew nearly 200 avid followers.

“I’ve fielded many calls from people asking what happened to Coffeehouse,” Suerth said.

The Senate’s decision to cut CAB’s budget was made in late June.

Its budget at the time was line-item vetoed by then-SA President Kevin Miller.

“Another session was arranged to be brought before the Senate, but the session didn’t make quorum because only a couple people showed up,” Suerth said. “Therefore, the veto was left on the table without being heard.”

The veto then went to the SA Supreme Court, which decided to uphold the decision, she said.

CAB has the opportunity at the first SA meeting of the semester to try to regain its funds.

“We’re gonna fight for our money back,” Suerth said.
