Life, Love and Sinatra
September 10, 2003
Life, love and music are the themes in the latest show at DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre.
Appropriately, that’s the title.
The show features Gavin Wilson, an NIU alumnus, along with the Shananigans, led by John Smith, with a host of local performers.
“Life, Love, and Music” is a collection of a songs linked by story and dialogue. It even contains a bit of magic, ventriloquism and dance.
As producer, Wilson wanted to create a show with different musical styles and perform it at the Egyptian Theatre.
“I really like the Egyptian,” Wilson said. “It is an historic theatre.”
During the two hour show, the performers present a review of big band songs and broadway showtunes. Among others, they play “All Back to You,” from The Phantom of the Opera and Frank Sinatra’s “Witchcraft.”
The show even includes an original composition from Wilson, titled “I Still Miss You.”
Wilson graduated from NIU in 1986 with a degree in music composition.
“This show is a great chance for people, including students, to enjoy music that may be vaguely familiar, but not performed often,” Wilson said. “This kind of show is not put on regularly. Young people are rediscovering big band and swing music.”
One can see “Life, Love, and Music” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street.
Tickets are available at The Hillside Restaurant, 121 N. Second St., or by calling 756-4749. They can also be purchased at the Egyptian Theatre box office the night of the show. The cost is $15.
