Future at your fingertips

By John Peters

On behalf of all the students, faculty and staff of Northern Illinois University, allow me to extend to you a warm welcome and best wishes as you begin or continue your time at NIU.

Throughout history, education has been the key to helping individuals gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in every type of economy.

Toward that end, NIU puts at your fingertips an endless array of resources that can help you secure the knowledge and cultivate the skills needed to thrive in changing and uncertain times. I urge you to make the most of these opportunities.

NIU faculty are among the most distinguished experts in their fields, and they are always available to guide you on your journey of learning. Take the time to seek them out, and I believe you will find them more than happy to act as mentors as well as teachers, providing you with an invaluable resource as you chart your course to a degree and a successful career.

An endless array of learning opportunities also exists outside of the classroom.

Dozens of clubs and organizations are available to you as an NIU student – from fraternal organizations and student government to religious groups and intramural sports teams.

Participating in these groups involves you in the life of the university and helps you learn more about yourself in the process. I also urge you to sample the wide range of fine arts programs available, attend some of the performances of your fellow students and view the exhibits of their artwork.

Come out and support our Huskie athletic teams, including one or two sports you have never seen before. It is likely that never again in your life will you have such a rich variety of cultural and entertainment offerings at your disposal, and often free.

Do not overlook your classmates as a source of knowledge. They are a diverse group, and the relationships you develop with them will help you appreciate other cultures and bring you to greater understanding about the world around you.

The friendships you forge will likely be those you cherish for the rest of your life.

Lastly, I encourage you to explore the many off-campus opportunities available to you. Internships, cooperative education, study abroad programs can all open doors to satisfying careers and exciting new experiences.

All of these things will give you a greater appreciation for the NIU experience and can help you feel a sense of community on campus. It will also help you to become a well-rounded, more valuable member of society – one who is ready for whatever challenges await after graduation.

In the meantime, I hope that you take full advantage this academic year of all of the resources here at NIU that will prepare you for the challenges that lie ahead. All of us who work to provide you with a world-class education wish you well and encourage you to take full advantage of the NIU experience.
