What if I smoke a blunt in my room?

By Larry Bolles

Dear Students, Welcome to Northern Illinois University! It is indeed a pleasure to officially extend this warm and sincere greeting to all new and returning students at our great university.

My name is Dr. Larry D. Bolles, and I am the director of the university judicial system.

One of the major functions of this office is to conduct a “due process” campus- based judicial system.

Many of you come from high schools that had a person in the role of dean of students who was responsible for addressing matters related to student discipline and any violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

Those of you who are transferring in from community colleges or other institutions of higher education probably are familiar with these kinds of offices.

As an academic community, Northern Illinois is committed to providing an environment in which learning and scholarship can flourish.

The members of our community – faculty, students, staff and administrators – have come together in voluntary association not merely to fulfill individual responsibilities, but also to contribute to the realization of the university objectives for the good of all.

It is important to note that the Northern Illinois University community subscribes to and strongly supports the right of each student to study and work in a quiet, respectful and non-violent atmosphere that is conducive to the pursuit and acquisition of knowledge.

To provide such an atmosphere, all members of our academic community will conduct themselves individually and collectively in ways that offer the opportunity for individual advancement.

The right of each individual to peaceful and thoughtful pursuit of knowledge is a major premise of this institution, and each member of the community is expected to assume responsibility for creating such conditions in residence halls, the library and all academic areas created for and dedicated to such purpose.

Please be aware that academic misconduct (cheating or plagiarism), acts of violence, drug-related offenses, sexual assault, stealing and major acts of computer misuse will subject a student to sanctions, to suspension and even expulsion from our university.

Finally, here are some answers to questions that some freshman might wonder about:

· What would probably happen if I beat up my roommate?

· What if I threaten the hall staff?

· What if I smoke a blunt in my room?

· What if I get a paper off the Internet and turn it in?

· What if I get into a brawl with friends?

· What if I get caught stealing weed?

· What if I get caught taking things that are not mine?

Just remember any of the above-mentioned violations probably will help you overcome any homesickness you might be experiencing.

Having said all that, relax and prepare to enjoy a truly grand experience as an NIU student.
