ISA celebrates unity
August 4, 2003
The Indian Student Association will hold an Independence Day celebration at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 512 Normal Road.
“It’s a social gathering to celebrate the culture and unity among people,” said Krupa Patel, public relations officer and a junior health administration major.
The gathering features playing of tabla hand drums, which are traditional in India.
Dhwani Shah, a graduate student in public health, will play the tabla.
ISA President Pravin Chathappuram, a junior finance major, said everyone is encouraged to attend.
“It’s a get-together that will let the DeKalb community learn about Indian culture,” Chathappuram said.
Traditional dance will be performed and attendees can enjoy sweets.
About 7 p.m., Promod Vohra, dean of engineering and engineering technology and ISA adviser, will speak about the need for Indians to unite and make a difference.
“We have a strong Indian community, and it’s important they’re given chances to develop as leaders and to affect the NIU environment in a positive manner,” Vohra said.
Vohra also will speak on why it’s important to support new students and to help mentor them.
ISA expects between 120 and 150 people to show up for the celebration.
