DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police have a suspect in custody after an alleged break-in Monday morning.

Wesley Abell, 22, of 811 W. Lincoln Highway is charged with attempted first degree murder, two counts of home invasion and one count of armed violence.

The suspect allegedly entered an apartment through a window at Suburban Estates, located on Twombly Road.

According to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s press release, Abell was armed with a pellet gun and several knives and demanded money from the occupants of the apartment.

Chief Deputy Kevin Hickey from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police said Abell did not know the occupants personally.

The occupant was stabbed by Abell after a violent struggle, according to the press release. The victim was severely injured and was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

Abell fled the residence on foot after being overpowered by the apartment occupant.

Hickey said a citizen followed him after he left the apartment and directed the police to his whereabouts.

Abell has had prior criminal arrests, Hickey said.

The charges Abell is facing are Class X, which are “Illinois’ worst of worst,” Hickey said. His minimum sentence will be six years in jail.

Abell will go before a judge today morning and receive his bond hearing.
