NIU Convocation Center fills summer vacancies
June 23, 2003
Just because a majority of the students are gone during the summer, that doesn’t mean the Convocation Center will stay empty.
The arena will host several public events during the summer months.
Joe Coots, director for the Convo Center, said there won’t be any concerts during the summer.
“Most of the artists play in the outdoors sheds; plus, all of the students are gone,” Coots said.
The Convo Center will welcome more than 90,000 people for five Jehova’s Witness events over the summer.
Also, the Greater DeKalb Kennel Club is hosting a dog show from July 6 to 7. Tickets for the event are $3.
“It’s like a dog show you would see on TV,” said Kevin Selover, marketing coordinator for the arena.
The show will feature all breeds and dogs will be judged on appearance and obedience.
Jennie Richardson, secretary for the Greater DeKalb Kennel Club, said that the dogs will come from all over the country.
“It’s a great place to go if you’re looking for a pet for your family,” Richardson said. “You’ll be able to find a reputable breeder who will be able to answer questions.”
The World Wide Marriage Encounter will be at the Convo Center from July 25 to 27 and will offer religious counseling for married couples.
According to its Web site, the event emphasizes communication between couples. Information and registration can be found at http://www.wwme.org/new.html.
From Aug. 1 to 3, about 1,000 people will attend Lanaholics, a mass computer game. Those wishing to attend will need to pay a $45 registration fee and visit www.lanaholics.com.
Finishing touches to the arena’s interior also are being completed during the summer, Selover said.
“We’re gearing up for the fall,” Coots said.
