NIU student Albert Ellis is still being held at the DeKalb County Jail after allegedly attempting an armed robbery, according to a DeKalb Police Department press release.

On June 17, Ellis, 26, of Chicago displayed a black semi-automatic handgun to an employee at the DeKalb Currency Exchange, 1504 Sycamore Road, as the employee was opening the store, according the release.

After the employee refused to comply, the offender fled in a green Lincoln Navigator, which earlier was reported carjacked by the Broadview Police Department. The release also stated there was another subject in the vehicle who escaped.

“He may have just been the driver,” DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said. “We are interested in finding him.”

A witness followed the suspect’s vehicle and showed it to police.

Ellis allegedly tried to escape on foot when police arrived, which led to a three-block chase. Ellis’ sister’s vehicle was found a half-block away from the Navigator, the release stated.

“She had loaned the car to him a day before,” Kayes said.

A duffel bag with two ski masks, sunglasses, handcuffs, scissors, gloves and tape was found next to the Navigator.

Kayes said Ellis has a previous criminal record, but Kayes couldn’t specify it.

Attempted armed robbery is a Class 1 Felony punishable by up to four to 15 years in the penitentiary with a fine of $25,000.
