Doin’ it to the crowd
April 8, 2003
Some kicked their feet in the air while others got jiggy with it Tuesday night at the “Do It to the Crowd” dance-off.
Delta Gamma walked away as the female victors and Sigma Phi Epsilon won for the men in the 13th annual dance competition presented by Alpha Sigma Alpha.
Dancers left an already animated crowd bursting with cheers after each dance team performed uniquely choreographed routines.
“It doesn’t get any better than sorority girls shaking it,” said Kenny Hairrell, co-emcee of the show.
Co-emcee Danny Sacomano agreed that the dancers just keep getting better and better each year.
One of the most crucial dynamics of the show was the music.
“People get very excited about the music,” said DJ Dan Porter. “Doing these events is always a blast.”
And style stood out as an essential element in the dancers’ performances.
The dancers’ apparel ranged from the Sigma Kappas donning JLo-like sparkly hipster outfits to the Sigma Sigma Sigmas who stood out in their glow-in-the-dark ripped tees.
“A young guy would have to be out of his mind to miss this event,” Porter said.
It appeared to be a close call for the judges in terms of determining the winners.
“For the girls, it’s a really intense competition. The guys just go out there and have fun,” said SAE team dancer Al Gray.
Coming in close behind the Dee Gees was Alpha Delta Pi in second place and Sigma Kappa in third.
Second place was awarded to the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, who heated up the crowd with intense break-dancing moves.
The main success of the show was the funds raised for the Special Olympics. Show coordinator Laura Rapacz estimated that the show pulled in about $1,000 from the event.
Overall, members of Alpha Sigma Alpha seemed very pleased with the night’s extraordinary turnout, but hoped for a broader range of participation in the future.
“In the next couple of years, I’d like to open it up to non-Greek organizations,” Rapacz said.
