Women’s basketball scores three recruits
April 2, 2003
Replacing seniors Kristan Knake and Kim Boeding will be a tough task for women’s basketball coach Carol Hammerle.
But a talented incoming recruiting class may help ease the process.
Hammerle has signed shooting guard Mary Basic, point guard Stephanie Raymond and center Kristin Wiener to play in DeKalb next winter.
“I’m excited about adding our three newcomers to the Huskie family,” Hammerle said. “With the addition of these three players, I believe they will take us to another level.”
Basic averaged 10.5 points per game last season while leading her Marian Catholic High School to a second-straight Class AA State Tournament appearance. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 10.3 points, four rebounds and a team best 3.7 assists per game her junior year. She was rated as one of the top 10 guards in the state by both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times following her junior year.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to coach Mary,” Hammerle said. “She’s an incredible scorer, but more importantly she’s quick and she has the best hands I’ve seen in a long time.”
Raymond averaged 20.8 points, 5.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 4.9 steals per game her junior year at Rockford Lutheran, and she was one of 24 finalists for the Illinois Ms. Basketball award.
The 5-foot-6 guard also holds the school record with 45 points in one game.
“In my opinion, Stephanie is the best point guard in the state,” Hammerle said. “She is an outstanding shooter and has great handles. It’s like having another coach on the floor.”
The final player to join the Huskie squad next season will be 6-foot-2 center Wiener.
Wiener averaged 15.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game her junior season. Going into this season, she was tabbed as one of the state’s top 100 players according to The Minnesota Basketball News.
In Wiener’s junior season, she shot 43 percent from the floor and 73 percent from the free-throw line, and she had 97 blocks in 29 games.
“Clearly, Kristin’s strength is her ability to run the floor,” Hammerle said. “She is quite capable of facing the basket and has a nice outside shoot with good touch.”
The women’s team had an extra scholarship this season it didn’t use, so the three newcomers will fill the extra spot as well as the scholarships left by Knake and Boeding.
