After losing to Marshall 6-1 on Friday, the NIU women’s tennis team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 5-2 MAC win over Miami (Ohio) at the Anderson Hall courts on Saturday.

The Huskies (12-6, 6-2 MAC) started quick with a sweep of all three doubles matches.

“We had an emotional match Friday against Marshall,” NIU coach Lauren Scott said. “It’s important that we turned it around and played at a high level today. We started out by sweeping the doubles point, and that really set the tone. Karrie Tyioran did a great job clinching the match for us. She struggled yesterday but bounced back with a solid performance.”

Tyioran took down the RedHawks’ Remy Swain 6-2, 6-0.

In singles, the Huskies were just as successful, winning four of the six singles matches all in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, NIU’s Branka Savic defeated Megan Zimpfer 6-2, 6-4, while Cassie Drake won her No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-0 for the Huskies.

The win kept the Huskies in contention for the top spot at the MAC Championships beginning on April 24.

“We were hoping the season would come down to the last week,” Scott said. “Our goal all along has been to be in this position. We’re definitely in the race from the top spot down. You could have a three way tie up top; that’s how close this conference is.”
