Krahula, Granath lead softball to its sweep

Three games, three wins.

Not only did NIU take a trio of games from Bowling Green this weekend at Mary Bell Field, but Amy Krahula did it as well.

The third-year starter took home all three victories from the mound this weekend, improving her record to 12-7. Krahula pitched 13 and two-thirds innings, gave up two runs on two hits and struck out 11 batters while walking none.

“We came out and showed our stuff,” Krahula said.

Krahula pitched complete games in the final two games of the three-game series this weekend. However, freshman Paige Granath pitched the first game on Saturday to get the Huskies rolling.

After finishing the first two innings of the first game on Saturday, NIU sophomore pitcher Kathy Dearborn did not return to action after injuring her pitching arm and is scheduled to see a doctor today. From there, Granath took over.

Granath was sick during the first half of the season, battling mononucleosis. Back at full strength, the rookie right-hander believed she pitched her best game of the year.

“It was my best outing,” Granath said. “Our defense just did really good Saturday.”

Doing the dirty work, Granath didn’t receive the decision. She pitched six and one-third innings, allowing three hits, no runs and striking out three.

NIU coach Donna Martin alluded to Granath being the Huskies’ non-statistical hero on Saturday.

“Some of the things she did won’t show up in the box score,” Martin said. “But she kept Bowling Green’s hitters off-balance all game and threw her change-ups for strikes. It was a great performance.”

Over three games, the NIU pitching staff threw 22 innings, gave up two runs on 15 hits, struck out 14 and walked two.

Though Krahula pitched 62 percent of the innings this weekend, Martin doesn’t believe she’s overworking the Huskies’ leader in wins.

“Everybody’s tired this time of year, we didn’t have much choice,” Martin said. “You gotta go with what you got.”
