Becoming a teacher may pay off

Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 will be distributed and collected by Minorities Inspiring Teaching Education (MITE).

“These particular scholarships were distributed to us through Future Teachers of Chicago, Illinois,” said Juletta Patrick, assistant dean of the College of Education. “They are available to all MITE and Future Education members.”

MITE is a student organization within the College of Education that supports students in teaching education programs. Today’s will be MITE’s fifth meeting this year.

“At past meetings, we’ve had many speakers talk about the opportunities that are in teaching,” MITE President Korina Marquez said. “This organization is beneficial to anyone who sees themselves in teaching education.”

Twenty to 30 scholarship applications will be available at tonight’s meeting.

“My goal is to come together and get as many of these applications in the mail as possible,” Patrick said.

MITE is open to every education major as well as students simply interested in teaching.

“I joined MITE my freshman year. I wasn’t involved in anything, but I wanted to be,” Marquez said. “MITE opened me up to so many opportunities that I know will be beneficial to my career.”

MITE gives current opportunities for mentoring as well as job availability.

“We mostly have presidents [from other schools] and pre-service students speak at our meetings about their experiences,” Patrick said. “The best way to inform students about education opportunities is by linking them with people who are actually teaching.”

This particular meeting will be particularly important to members of MITE and Future Teachers.

“Future Teachers of Chicago, Illinois, will be looking for people who have participated in groups such as MITE and Future Teachers,” Patrick said. “But, if a student has participated in a teaching organization outside of those two, it would be in his or her best interest to show up. Any students who are interested in joining MITE should also come to see how this process is done, and to receive information.”
