Wrestling NCAA Championships kick off
March 20, 2003
Five wrestlers are in Kansas City, Mo., representing the Huskies today through Saturday at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Scott Owen, junior Ben Heizer, sophomore Sam Hiatt and freshman Josh Wooton, along with senior alternate Marlon Felton all made the trip.
The 157-pound Owen, who is ranked as high as No. 1 in his weight-class according to the wrestlingmall.com Web site, received a fourth seed. Owen has a 19-1 record this season with 14 matches being won by either pinfall or technical fall, a victory by 15-plus points.
Owen will face Rafael Maturino from Oklahoma in his first matchup.
The intermatwrestle.com Web site says that Owen “may be the most anonymous top four seed in the tournament and is capable of big things.”
Heizer, the eighth-ranked 184-pounder, received the ninth seed in the NCAA Championships.
Heizer (25-4) is scheduled to hit the mat against Northern Iowa’s Jordan Holm in his first match.
Hiatt and Wooton are both taking their first journeys to the NCAAs this season.
Both Hiatt and Wooton are unseeded.
The 133-pound Hiatt is going to face 10th-seeded Richard LaForge from Hofstra in his first match. Hiatt was 24-8 this season.
Wooton (26-10), who was first on the team in wins, is going to face Coyte Cooper from Indiana in the first round of the 141-pound weight class. Cooper won their only meeting this season with a final of 13-4.
“I thought that we could send anywhere from three to 10 guys before the MAC Championships,” coach Dave Grant said. “Sending four is great. We should do fine at the NCAAs.”
