Lil’ Kim
March 20, 2003
The naughty and nasty girl from Brooklyn is finally back on the music scene with the release of her latest album “La Bella Mafia.”
Lil’ Kim’s 15-track release is everything you would expect from the Queen Bee. Plenty of sex-driven lyrics mixed with that confident attitude that only Kim has. “La Bella Mafia” has the perfect combination of beats and lyrics to make this album huge.
The first single off the album is a club-friendly jam called “The Jump Off.” Mr. Cheeks makes an appearance on the Timbaland-produced track. The song was a perfect first single because it laid the foundation for what to expect from the rest of the album.
Many of Kim’s other tracks include all-star appearances. The best collaboration on the album is with Missy Elliot. The track “Can You Hear Me Now?” proves that everything Missy Elliot does is bound to be a hit.
The man of the hour, 50 Cent, drops in on the track “Magic Stick.” 50 and Kim rap over a B.B. King flow. Styles from The Lox appears on “Get in Touch with Us” and blows up the track. Kim is put on the back burner, leaving Styles to make it hot.
Kim does something on the album that is unexpected, but not a smart move for her. On the track “This is a Warning,” Kim sings. She needs to stick to rapping because the track is pathetic. At the end of the song, you will hear Kim laughing. It will leave you wondering if she is laughing because she realizes just how terrible she sounds.
Another laughable track on the album is a song with the child rapper Lil’ Shanice. “Shake Ya Bum Bum” will leave listeners wondering what the hell Kim was thinking. A track that is similar to one by Ricky Martin? A very bad idea.
The coolest part about getting this album is that Kim gives you a personal identification number to enter into her Web site that allows you to access a special part of it. There are videos and a handful of audio tracks. The best part is that you get to see some very interesting pictures of the rapper.
Kim does make up for the bad tracks though, making the album successful. Her beats make up for her lack of lyrical talent, making this an album that will be all over the club scene. “La Bella Mafia” will help launch Kim out of the rut that her last album “Notorious K.I.M.” put her in.
