Housing options open for next semester
February 28, 2003
For students living in the residence halls, it is time to start thinking about next year’s housing options.
Residents should receive their lottery number by today. The number of students are assigned determines the priority they will be given for selecting a room for the fall semester. Depending on the number, a resident will sign up for next year’s housing on either March 25 or 26. A lower lottery number is higher priority. The numbers are assigned to students randomly, independent of factors such as age, seniority and GPA, said David Dunlap, coordinator of marketing and public relations for Student Housing and Dining Services.
If students are not able to appear in person for their designated sign-up time, they can send a friend to select their housing arrangements for them. Students choosing this option must give their friend a completed Proxy Form (included in the envelope that the lottery number is mailed in) and their signed contract extension form to take with them to their housing selection time.
Students wishing to sign up to keep their single room need to do so on March 4 through 7. Otherwise, the singles will be offered to other residents starting March 18.
Academic Residential Programs allow residents to take part in special opportunities centered around their academic interests while still being able to participate in the regular social and educational activities offered to other floors.
At registration time, students also will be obligated to choose one of three meal plans for the fall semester.
Residence hall housing will be tight this fall because NIU expects another large freshman class, said Residential Life Director Willard Draper.
“I would advise current residents to take a good look at their housing options,” Draper said. “Do what you need to do to ensure yourself a spot.”
