Wrestling takes share of MAC title

With two weeks off before the MAC Championships, the NIU wrestling squad will have some time to enjoy being the co-champs of the MAC.

Central Michigan pounded Kent State with a final of 26-9 on Saturday night. Then, the Huskies beat Buffalo and Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon, causing CMU, KSU and NIU (15-6, 4-1 MAC) to have a three-way tie for the conference championship. The Huskies’ 15 wins tie the school record for most wins in a season. The 29 victories the past two seasons break a school-record.

“This team is getting stronger and stronger as the year goes on,” coach Dave Grant said. “I’m proud of the dual meet season the guys have had. Their hard work has paid off. We’re sitting in a great position. The guys are wrestling better and better each week, and their attitude has been great.”

In the first part of the day, NIU beat Buffalo 31-6.

Marlon Felton (125 pounds) pinned, Michael Sebaaly, and all three of the Huskies ranked wrestlers won by either technical fall or major decision.

Third-ranked 157-pound Scott Owen and eighth-ranked 184-pound Ben Heizer both had major decisions with finals of 13-2 and 11-2, respectively. Heizer’s win was over 20th-ranked Garrett Bontempo.

Josh Wooton, the 18th-ranked 141-pounder, won by a 19-4 technical fall.

After NIU was done dealing with the Bulls, it took on the host Eagles. It was another easy win for the Huskies, as they cruised to a 30-9 victory.

Both Buffalo and Eastern Michigan remain winless in the MAC this season.

Owen had a 21-6 technical fall over Chad Roush.

Senior 149-pound Oliver Vazquez, 174-pound Bill Lowney, Wooton and Felton all had major decisions for the Huskies.

On the day, every NIU wrestler had at least one victory.

“The idea is to wrestle as hard as you can, and we felt like we did that,” Grant added. “Our guys were very aggressive. Anytime you can score 30 points in a dual meet, it’s pretty impressive. The guys are very confident in their shape. They’re getting guys tired, and it’s a big benefit to have that on your side.”
