Making an Anchor Splash
February 24, 2003
Blue and yellow shakers, beats from a snare drum, the American flag and house chants filled the air Anchor Splash 2003 kicked off Sunday at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.
Emcees started by introducing the deejay, the judges and the Greek organizations. Shouts and cheers from the 800-strong crowd filled the air, earning spirit points for the fraternities and sororities that made the loudest noise.
“Many call it the Homecoming of the second semester,” said Jenny Fernandes, director of Anchor Splash 2003 and member of Delta Gamma.
With dirty dancing, body slams, breaking furniture, full-monty style pants drops, celebrity spoofs and an ample amount of shaking fake, stuffed booty, Anchor Splash 2003 had something for everyone.
Eight fraternities and eight sororities participated in the night’s events, along with Women’s Rugby and the Silverettes dance team.
“We’re really glad the Silverettes and Women’s Rugby came out because they represented the non-Greek community,” Fernandes said.
Mr. and Ms. Anchor Splash 2003, a three-minute performance by one guy and one girl, was the first event of the night.
There were skits, dancing, singing, guitar playing and even a Barbara Walters and Michael Jackson mock interview.
Lip-Sync, a seven-minute act, was the next category.
Talented students were transformed into celebrities like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Eminem, among others.
Many acts showcased dances, costumes and music from the past decades culminating in the present.
Audiences also were singing along to sound tracks from popular shows like “Three’s Company,” “Gilligan’s Island,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “The Flintstones.”
The awards ceremony at the end presented awards for the day’s events.
Triangles and Women’s Rugby won the Mr. and Ms. Anchor Splash 2003.
Phi Kappa Theta and the Silverettes took home the Lip-Sync trophy.
Alpha Kappa Lambda and Sigma Lambda Sigma won the overall trophy.
All the proceeds from ticket sales, raffle sales and Anchor Splash T-shirt sales will be donated to Service for Sight, the chosen charity of the ladies of Delta Gamma who were the organizers of Anchor Splash.
“We support each other to maximize what we can donate to charities; part of being Greek is supporting the community,” said Isaak Lerner, a sophomore OMIS major.
